A Family Practice Network, or FPN, provides a mechanism through which a physician group can address common practice and patient needs, have a collective voice on issues facing family practice, and address local population health needs, in coordination with zonal representation from the Provincial Health Authority, NL Health Service (NLHS). The FPN structure is a physician-led, non-profit organization.
The Borealis FPN was incorporated in July 2025 and represents participating family physicians in Labrador and Northern Newfoundland. Their name is derived from the spectacular display of vibrant lights in the northern hemisphere known as Aurora Borealis, symbolizing the collective energy and dynamics of rural generalists in promoting a new dawn in the north for family practice.
